Queen's South Africa 1899-1902, 5 clasps, Cape Colony, Driefontein, Johannesburg, Diamond Hill, Belfast (3728 Pte. H. Francis 14/Hrs.), light contact marks, very fine

Herbert Francis was born at Hulme, Manchester and was a blacksmith prior to joining the army on 29 December 1897. Posted to South Africa from 22 December 1899 he saw heavy action with the Regiment. They earned a V.C. near Geluk in 1900 and a great many skirmishes during the guerilla phase of the war in Eastern Transvaal.

Leaving South Africa on May 1903 he saw home service until joining the reserve on 29 December 1904. Finally discharged on 28 December 1909, he is additionally entitled to a King's South Africa medal with the 2 clasps.
