Queen's South Africa 1899-1902, no clasp (2776 Pte J. Dorcey. Rl: Berks: Regt), toning, two minor edge knocks, otherwise very fine
James Dorcey was born in 1870 in Westminster and attested with the 4th East Surrey Regiment at the Royal Berkshire Depot in Reading aged 19 after working as a labourer. He was posted to the 2nd Royal Berkshires two months later in October 1889, and was transferred to the 1st Royal Berkshire Regiment in Malta in March 1891.
Dorcey was imprisoned in January 1892 until March for striking his superior officer, and while stationed in Bermuda in 1893 was again briefly imprisoned for drunkenness and theft. Over the next several years, Dorcey served in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Gibraltar, and South Africa where he was posted with the 2nd Royal Berkshire Regiment until being discharged in July 1902; sold together with copied research.
There is a James Dorcey who served with the South Wales Borderers during WWI and was killed in action on the Western Front in May 1917, possibly the same man.
