Joseph Anderson was born at Dundee in 1870 and was a labourer by trade upon his joining the Royal Scots Fusiliers in 1893. He served in India from 23 January 1895-9 February 1902 (Medal & 2 clasps) and thence in South Africa from until September 1902 (Queen's Medal & 2 clasps).
Released in December 1909, he claimed Anderson was an alias and re-enlisted under the name 'Joseph Fraser' in September 1917, by this time 46 years and unable to write, signing on with his mark.
