East and West Africa 1887-1900, 1 clasp, Benin 1897 (T. Hodgson, Pte .. H.M.S. Philomel.), light contact marks, otherwise very fine
Thomas Hodgson was born on 25 April 1875 at East Cowine, Sussex. He had previously worked as a railway porter before enlisting into the Royal Marines on 22 August 1893 at London. Hodgson began his career at the Royal Marine Depot at Walmer until 10 April 1894 when he was posted to the Plymouth Division. He was aboard the Philomel from 25 October 1894 until 1 March 1898. During his time on Philomel, he was wounded at the bombardment of Zanzibar on 27 August 1896 and was also wounded during the Benin Expedition when he landed as part of the Naval Brigade in February 1897. He served with the Plymouth Division from 2 March 1898, with a brief spell on Britannia from 19 April 1900 until 9 November 1900 when he returned to the Plymouth Division, serving there until his discharge by purchase on 27 March 1901.
Hodgson then enrolled into the Royal Fleet Reserve on 28 March 1902 and further re-enrolled on 28 March 1907. He saw service in the Great War, the majority of which he spent on Vivid for Eclipse before finally being discharged on 31 December 1918. Hodgson is additionally entitled to a 1914-15 Star trio and a Royal Fleet Reserve L.S. & G.C. medal.
