East and West Africa 1887-1900, 1 clasp, Gambia 1894 (J. W. Callender, Pte. R.M., H.M.S. Raleigh.), very fine

John Marr Callander was born on 6 September 1863 at Barney, Glasgow, Lanarkshire. Callander was a pattern maker by trade before enlisting into the Royal Navy on 6 August 1883 at Paisley. He served on Diamond from 14 January 1885 before being posted to Chatham Dockyard from 7 March 1889 until 11 January 1891, with a brief spell on Rodney in July 1889. Callander next served on Raleigh between 12 January 1891 and 27 April 1891. This was followed by a short time on Penelope before returning to Raleigh on 24 July 1891, remaining there until 23 February 1895.

During this time, Callander saw service in the Gambia and his service papers note that he was wounded sometime between February and March 1894, with the further note "Landed Gambia". He returned to Chatham and was there from 24 February 1895 until he was posted to Charybdis on 24 July 1895. Callander's final service at Chatham began on 31 August 1895 and lasted until his discharge on 3 September 1895.

The medal roll has him noted as J. W. Callender and the medal was collected by him at Chatham on 9 September 1895. His service number CH.2576 corresponds on both the roll and his service papers, so clearly an error by the part of the Royal Mint.
