South Africa 1877-79, 1 clasp, 1878-9 (1578. Pte J. Carroll. 80th Foot.), light contact marks, very fine
James Carroll was born at Ballymena, Down, Ireland and he enlisted at Belfast on 6 January 1871. His service papers confirm his entitlement to an India General Service 1854-95 with a Perak clasp as well as the South Africa medal. Carroll appeared in the regimental defaulters book a total of 52 times and was tried by Court Martial 3 times. Conduct and character very bad addicted to drunkenness. He was discharged at Dublin on 16 August 1881.
