Indian Mutiny 1857-59, 2 clasps, Relief of Lucknow, Delhi (Pte. G. Gilbert, 9 Lancers.), officially impressed naming in the Indian Army style, one minor edge knock at 6 o'clock, otherwise good very fine
George Gilbert served with the 9th (Queen's Royal) Lancers during the Indian Mutiny and appears in the British Army Worldwide Index of both 1861 and 1871 as serving with the 9th Lancers. He served under regimental number 2044. While confirmed on the medal roll as being entitled to the clasp 'Relief of Lucknow', apparently Gilbert was not actually present for the engagement, reportedly being ill. The 9th Lancers distinguished themselves during the Indian Mutiny, earning a total of 12 Victoria Crosses and were given the nickname 'The Delhi Spearmen' by the mutineers themselves.
Gilbert is also one of only 12 other members of the 9th Lancers with clasps for 'Relief of Lucknow' and 'Delhi' to not also be entitled to the clasp 'Lucknow'.
