Edward George Haynes was born at Camberwell on 28 October 1893 and joined the Royal Navy as Boy Class II on 11 August 1911. His first posting afloat was that same month with the Battleship Prince George, Haynes was to be advanced Ordinary Seaman with that vessel on 11 February 1912.

Further advanced Able Seaman in 1913 Haynes was posted to the Light Cruiser Constance on 26 January 1916. This Cambrian-class vessel was the lead ship of the 4th Light Cruiser Squadron, stationed with the Grand Fleet during the Battle of Jutland.

They were deployed ahead of the Fleet to engage German torpedo attacks and engaged the 5th Flotilla of Torpedo Boats. During the pursuit they encountered a squadron of Battleships which failed to immediately identify them. Taking advantage of this Calliope attempted a torpedo run prompting a hail of 12-inch and 5.9-inch shells over the Squadron.

Under this heavy fire they withdrew and took up stations on the unengaged side of the British fleet. Haynes remained with Constance until the end of the war, she meanwhile was stationed with the Grand Fleet for the duration.

Joining the Royal Fleet Reserve on 6 November 1920 he was demobilised the next year on 5 June 1921; sold together with copied service papers.
