Frank Cowie was educated at Scotland and volunteered for the Indian Army during the Great War. Posted as 2nd Lieutenant to the Indian Army Reserve of Officers on 1 March 1917 he was trained at the Officer's School of Instruction at Ambala.
Initially attached to the 88th (Carnatic) Infantry Cowie was transferred to the 79th (Carnatic) Infantry on 1 October 1918 to serve as a Company Commander with the rank of Captain. He was particularly suited to this role as a speaker of Hindustani. Cowie was confirmed in this appointment in 1921 with the promotion backdated to May 1918. Seeing wide service in the Middle East during this time he received a 'mention' as a Company Commander in Iraq in 1921; sold together with copied London Gazette extracts and Indian Army Lists as well as handwritten research.
