Herbert Casswell was born on 18 January 1887 and was married to Emily Casswell at Codford St Mary, Wiltshire in June 1915. She lived at "Malvern," Cemetery Road, Wath-on-Dearne, Rotherham, Yorkshire.
He proceeded to France with the 7th Battalion on 27 July 1915 (1915 Star) and was killed in action on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, 1 July 1916. On this date the Battalion was involved in an attack west of Montauban - going over the top at 0730hrs heavy fire at first held up the advance in front of the Breslau support trench, and they later fought on through Back Trench and Train Alley to Montauban Alley. After almost 12 hours; fighting the final objective was reached and consolidated on a front of about 200 yards. Total casualties were 532, which included Casswell. He is commemorated upon the Thiepval Memorial and also with a family memorial at Wath-Upon-Dearne Cemetery which reads:
'Lance Corpl. Herbert Casswell 7th Queen's Royal West Surrey Regt. Who fell in Battle July 1st 1916, buried on the battlefield, in a small crater 3/4 N.E. of Church at Carnoy, France.'
