Posted as Stoker Class II to the cruiser Brilliant while she was guardship of the Tyne river on 16 April he was still with her on the night of 15-16 June when the zeppelin L10 attacked targets along the river. Brilliant returned fire but failed to cause a hit, 18 were killed and 72 wounded.

Posted to Forward on 17 August he remained with her in the channel until July 1916 when the light cruiser was ordered to the Mediterranean, from there she finished the war in the Aegean Sea. Murray saw some postwar service before joining the Royal Fleet Reserve on 21 January 1920; sold together with copied service papers.
