Henry Mason was born on 20 November 1891 at Nelson, Lancashire. He joined the Royal Navy on 2 August 1914 as a Junior Reserve Attendant on Vivid. He served on board the Hospital Ship Rewa16 June 1915 - 10 September 1915 and served mainly on Vivid I and Vivid III until he was Shore Demobilized on 17 April 1919. His service papers note Mobilised 1939 and SBR 1959.

His Long Service Medal was awarded on 11 November 1921 with the 1st bar awarded on 15 February 1937 and a 2nd bar on 14 January 1944. A total of 40 2 bar medals were awarded.
