Victor George Sharman was born at Scunthorpe Lincolnshire on 29 November 1895. Enlisting with the Royal Navy on 31 January 1914 as an Ordinary Seaman his first posting afloat was the battleship Queen on 7 March 1914. Sharman later transferred to the Light Cruiser Falmouth, stationed with the 1st Light Cruiser Squadron, on 15 April 1914.

With her he was to see action at both Heligoland Bight and Dogger Bank in August 1914 and January 1915 respectively. Promoted Able Seaman not long after the latter on 1 April 1915, Sharman was to serve in that rank during the Battle of Jutland.
