William Barrett initially enlisted in the Somerset Light Infantry and was allotted number 10241; he subsequently transferred to the Dorset Regiment and was allotted a new number 16207. He died of wounds whilst serving with the 2nd Battalion, Dorset Regiment on 23 April 1916 following the Battle of Sanna-i-Yat and is commemorated at The Basra Memorial.
