John Flett was born at St. Giles, Edinburgh in 1876 and enlisted there on 6 December 1899. Posted to South Africa on 30 April 1900 he was taken prisoner of war not long later at Vredefort on 7 June 1900. Likely one of the 30 men taken at Vredefort station by Commandant Steenkamp. Shown incorrectly in the SA Field Force casualty roll as '6881 Fleet' (Vide The Register of the Anglo-Boer War). Released or freed at some stage that year he was again taken prisoner of war at Klip Drift on 15 February 1902.
After the war he was posted to India where he was to serve for four years before returning to Britain. Seeing nearly eight years of Home service he was finally posted to the Army Reserve in 1911.
Mobilised for service in the Great War Flett entered the war in France on 5 December 1914 (1914-15 Star Trio). Transferred to the Mediterranean on 3 July 1915 he returned to Britain in September. After a year of Home service he was invalided due to sickness on 20 April 1916.
