The K.S.A. awarded to Private H. Hart, Royal Army Medical Corps, who was noted as missing on 28 November 1901 at Doornkop but rejoined his unit
King's South Africa 1901-02, 2 clasps, South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902 (14216 Pte H. Hart. R.A.M.C.), deeply toned, otherwise extremely fine
Herbert Hart was born at Westminster in 1879 and enlisted at London on 28 May 1900. Appointed Orderly Class 3 on 4 August he arrived in South Africa on 28 August 1900. Serving with the 18 Brigade Field Hospital he was posted as missing near Doornkop on 28 November 1901. Never stated to have deserted and returning to British lines without punishment on 7 December 1901 it is likely he was briefly taken prisoner of war. While not disallowed under the Geneva Convention there were only six instances of Army Medics being taken prisoner during the war, but later released. Vide The Register of the Anglo-Boer War. Hart went on to serve in Mauritius from 7 April 1903 and was discharged there at his own request on 19 August 1903.
