The RAF Survey Flights
1931 Air-Sea Survey Flights
1931 (6 Apr.) envelope carried on the preliminary phase by Flying-boat S.1162 from Brunei to Singapore, marked "By Air Mail", franked at 21c., the 5c. and 10c. tied by framed "air mail/brunei" and the 6c. tied by Brunei c.d.s. and showing, on reverse, arrival datestamp (9.4). Rare, only 10 items of mail carried. Photo

Note: In the spring of 1931 the RAF, together with the Royal Navy, undertook a survey of coral reefs in the South China Sea north-west of North Borne. On 31 March the RAF Flying-boat S.1162, piloted by Sq.-Ldr G.E. Livock, left Seletar to make a preliminary survey of the area. When this was completed, S.1162 returned to Seletar on 9 April after an overnight stay at Kuching. The only mail was picked up at Brunei. An airmail fee of 15 cents was charged in addition to the surface rate of 4 cents.
