Ernest Yates was born at South Bank, Yorkshire and enlisted with the 3rd Battalion, Rifle Brigade at Middlesborough. He entered the war in France on 24 September 1915 and was killed in action on 1 September 1916 when the Battalion launched attacks on Orchard Trench and Tea Trench. Yates is commemorated upon the Thiepval Memorial.
