(x) China 1900, no clasp (3014 Sergt J. Rafferty S. & T. Corps), small edge nick and light scratches, otherwise very fine

Medal forfeited in 1904 and re-issued in 1907, the recipient was service with the Connaught Rangers in 1900 and appears on the S. & T. Corps roll as 2nd Battalion, Connaught Rangers.

John Rafferty was born at St. Patrick's, near Moate, Westmeath. A labourer prior to enlisting into the Connaught Rangers on 24 July 1888, he served in Malta from 13 July 1898. Later posted to Egypt on 10 February 1895, during which time he was promoted to Sergeant before embarking for India on 26 January 1897. Rafferty joined the China Expedition on 10 October 1900, disembarking at Hsinho on 5 November. He was awarded the China medal on 1 April 1902, but duly forfeited it on 30 April 1904 as a result of being Court martialled for "Embezellment" and was reduced to the rank of Private before having it restored on 30 April 1907.

In the meantime he saw Home service between 25 March 1903-12 March 1907 and then to Malta until 8 March 1908 before returning home. He was discharged at Tipperary on 22 July 1909 having reached the rank of Corporal; sold together with a copied medal roll.
