James Naughton was born at Tipperary, Ireland in 1875 and attested with the Royal Irish Regiment on 24 January 1894. Posted to the 2nd Battalion he was with them on the North-West Frontier from 1897 when they took part in a series of expeditions and punitive raids intended to quell the disturbances there. He was one of few men from the Battalion to serve in the Tirah Expedition 1897-98, earning the clasp as a result.
Later advanced Corporal Naughton must have re-engaged as he was still with the Regiment on the outbreak of the Great War. Entering the war in France on 25 January 1915 he was to serve there for over a year before being discharged due to age on 23 January 1916. Naughton must have remained in service in some capacity as he is listed on the Commonwealth War Graves Register as dying on 10 December 1920. He is buried at Edinburgh (Newington or Echo Bank) Cemetery on 10 December 1920; sold together with copied medal rolls, service papers and a Commonwealth War Graves certificate.
