Charles Lowther was born at Penrith, Cumbria in 1876, the son of Thomas and Sarah Lowther of 28 Lowther Street, Penrith. Enlisting there on 30 December 1899 with the 24th (Westmorland and Cumberland) Company, Imperial Yeomanry, Lowther sailed for South Africa on 11 February 1900. His service record notes his presence at three actions during the course of the war including Hoopstaadt, Douglas and Tabars Spruit. Returning to Britain on 28 January 1901 he served until March before being discharged. Lowther is recorded upon the 1901 census living with his half-brother and sister at 23 Rutland Park, London.
Laurence Lowther was born at Penrith, Cumbria in October 1882, the son of Thomas and Sarah Lowther of 28 Lowther Street, Penrith. Emigrating to South Africa, Lowther returned to Britain aboard the Walmer Castle on 27 January 1915 for military service. Enlisting on 3 April 1915 at Carlisle with the Royal Horse Artillery, he was posted to 'R' Battery in September. Lowther entered the Great War at Gallipoli on 6 October 1915 only to be hospitalised in December. Rejoining his unit in January 1916 he returned to the conflict in France on 17 March 1916 and served there until being posted to the Army Reserve on 6 July 1919.
C. T. Lowther was commissioned Captain during the Second World War; sold together with an original slip of issue for his Second World War campaign medals.
