Herbert Edwin Squire was born on Exmoor on 19 Ocotber 1893 and was a labourer upon his joining the Royal Navy in May 1913. During the Great War he served aboard Bellona from 22 October 1913-29 May 1917 and was aboard her for the Battle of Jutland. She had on 17 December 1914 previously collided with the Broke, although both ships were seriously damaged, there were no deaths. Captain Arthur Dutton assumed command on 24 April 1916 and during the Battle she remained in the rear and did not fire her guns. He latterly served on the Sprightly and Dorking and was put ashore in January 1920.
