William George Frederick "Nobby" Colebeck was born at Edmonton, north London, on 25 November 1909. Finding work 'out East', Colebeck was a sanitation inspector in Singapore upon the outbreak of the Second World War. He joined the Straits Settlements Volunteer Force which was stationed between Keppel Harbour and Tanjong Rhu during the Japanese Siege of Singapore in 1942. Colebeck was taken prisoner during the fall of the city on 15 February that year and is listed as being held in 'No. 4 Camp'. Fortunate indeed to survive the war, Colebeck returned to Britain and died at Canterbury in October 1978. His brother Edward Robert Colebeck was killed in action when H.M.S. Ibis was sunk in the Mediterranean on 10 November 1942.
