Charles Winch was born at St Luke's, Middlesex in 1872 and was a coach painter by trade upon his joining the Leicestershire Regiment in November 1892. He served in South Africa from 23 July 1895-31 March 1900 and 4 September 1901-12 September 1902 (Queen's Medal & 2 clasps, King's Medal & 2 clasps) and was discharged on 21 November 1908.
