(x) Pair: Private A. Sutcliffe 7th The Queens Own Hussars

Indian Mutiny 1857-59, no clasp (Alfred Sutcliffe 7th Husrs); India General Service 1854-95, 1 clasp, North West Frontier (1441 Corpl A. Sutcliffe 7th Hussars), very fine (2)

Alfred Sutcliffe was present with the Regiment in the field in Oude from 25 March-1 October 1858 including the affairs of Barree, Kirlee and the action at Nawabgunge. At Barree the rebels attacked Grant's Column and took off with a pair of guns, but they were chased by a Troop of the 7th Hussars under Captain Richard Topham who retrieved the guns. This Troop was in action twice more when further attacks were made. Topham and 6 men were injured in these skirmishes. The 7th Hussars were again in action at Nawabgunge, when they charged twice under the leadership of Sir William Russell and went through the rebels successfully, killing all they came across. The battle lasted three hours and six of the enemy guns were captured. They had killed 600 rebels.

During their service on the North West Frontier the 7th charged three times and the enemy were driven back and routed. The British losses were light, 2 killed and seventeen wounded, 9 of which were from the 7th Hussars. Sutcliffe was discharged on 17 January 1867, his Medal was sent to Edinburgh on 18 November 1876.
