The British War Medal awarded to Private P. Griffin, Irish Guards, who was mortally wounded during the capture of the Canal du Nord and died on 8 October 1918

Patrick Griffin was born at Dongal, Ireland in 1896, the son of Daniel and Mary Griffin. Working as a Spirit Salesman prior to the Great War he enlisted at Glasgow on 26 October 1915 with the Irish Guards. Joining the war in France on 26 August 1916 he was thrice wounded over the next two years of fighting. The final wound, sustained during the first day of the fighting over the Canal du Nord on 27 September 1918 proved mortal. Griffin lived on into October but died on 8 October 1918 and was buried at the Abbeville Communal Cemetery Extension; sold together with copied research comprising transcribed service details, M.I.C. and a Commonwealth War Graves certificate.
