Egypt and Sudan 1882-89, undated reverse, 1 clasp, Gemaizah 1888 (2447. Pte. J. W. Davidson. 2/K.O. Sco: Bord:), pitting, edge bruising, nearly very fine

John William Davidson was born in 1869 at Haydon Bridge, Northumberland, and enlisted with the King's Own Scottish Borderers on 3 October 1887. Posted to the 2nd Battalion he was sent to Egypt the next year on 19 July 1888, were 2nd Battalion formed part of the Sirdar General Grenfell's Anglo-Egyptian army in the expedition to throw back a Mahdist attack over the border from Sudan. Advancing into eastern Sudan Grenfell met the Mahdist army at Suakin and fought an action at Gemaizah which halted their advance with heavy losses. He fought a further engagement at Toski - fought entirely with Egyptian troops except for a single cavalry squadron - which ended the attempt on Egypt.

Davidson continued to serve with the unit, remaining in Egypt until 1 January 1890 when he sailed for India. After five years of service there and another three years in Britain he was finally posted to the Army Reserve on 6 December 1895 and discharged on 2 October 1899; sold together with copied service papers.
