Egypt and Sudan 1882-89, 1 clasp Tel-El-Kebir (2280. Pte. W. Clearly. 2/R.Ir:R.), minor contact wear and pitting, overall very fine
William Cleary was born at Lismore, Waterford in 1861 and served with the Waterford Artillery prior to enlisting with the 69th Brigade on 23 July 1879. Posted to the 2nd Battalion, 18th (Royal Irish) Regiment on 8 August 1879 he was still with them in 1882 when they were posted to General Sir Garnet Wolsey's army for service in Egypt. Here he saw action in the fierce battle of Tel-El-Kebir, were a night march and dawn assault carried the Egyptian trenches.
Posted from Egypt to Malta on 19 February 1883 before returning Home on 29 May of that year. This was not to be Cleary's only visit to the garrison however as the Battalion returned for service there on 4 March 1884. Posted from there back to Egypt on 15 January 1885 where he remained until September. Returning to Britain for the final time on 22 September Cleary was transferred to the Army Reserve on 10 November 1885.
