John R. Wheeler was born at Broughton on 5 June 1879. Having served during the Boer War, he was with 'C' Company, 2nd Battalion, Wiltshire Regiment and was taken a Prisoner of War at Ypres on 24 October 1914. He was held at Gottingen Camp, Hanover; sold together with a fine album comprising his time as a POW, with images of the conditions, comrades and other scenes of the various nationalities who were held at that place (including Russians, Spaniards, Congolese and others), besides rather battered silver cigarette case, OCA pin and Warrant Officer's sash.
