Alexander Ivan Ward was born in 1886, the son of Dr. William John Cuthbert Ward and Violet Anne Ward, of Harrogate, Yorkshire. He served in France as a 2nd Lieutenant with the 11th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry from 20 July 1915. He had earned a 'mention' (London Gazette 4 January 1917, refers) and an M.B.E., besides being made Temporary Captain. During the Second World War he was re-commissioned into the Royal Norfolk Regiment and then joined the Army Dental Corps. Reported dangerously ill, he died on 26 March 1943, aged 57. Ward was buried in the Basingstoke Cemetery.
