Rodney Colin Smith was born at Penrith, New South Wales, on 3 March 1946, the son of Marion Smith of 63 Parker Street, New South Wales. Working as an Apprentice Boiler Maker prior to enlisting as part of the National Service Scheme on 1 February 1967. Smith was sent to 1st Recruit training Battalion at Kapooka before transferring on 13 April to 3rd Training Battalion at Singleton. Injured during training on 3 June he was sent to No. 8 Camp Hospital, being discharged on 9 June 1967.
Sent to the Infantry Centre at Ingleburn on 28 June Smith was trained in Jungle Warfare before being enplaned for South Vietnam on 10 October 1967. Serving here until 28 January 1968 when he fell ill and was sent to 8th Field Ambulance. Smith was sent to Australia on 13 June 1968 next seeing service on exercise in New Zealand in September 1968. Finally discharged at Brisbane on 31 January 1969 Smith did re-enlist with the A.C.M.F. on 8 September 1975 with 5th Field Squadron, Engineers; sold together with an Infantry Combat Badge, rank chevron and lanyard as well as typed research notes.
Further entitled to the Australian Active Service Medal Vietnam and the National Service Medal.
