Sidney Stanford was born at West Ham on 2 May 1900 and was a tin smith upon his joining the Royal Navy on 15 March 1918. He served aboard Powerful and Revenge by the armistice. Remaining in the service, Stanford was discharged ashore on 1 May 1930 but upon the outbreak of the Second World War re-joined Enterprise on 24 August 1939. He was made Acting Leading Seaman aboard Royal Arthur on 31 August 1942 and was invalided from the RN Hospital, Skegness on 11 March 1946. Stanford was awarded his Imperial Service Medal as a Postman in London on 29 March 1957.
