Frederick Charles Staley was born at Nottingham in 1883, the son of George and Mary Staley of 181 Cinderhill Road, Bulwell, Nottingham. Enlisting at Nottingham with the Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment) he was posted to 16th (Chatsworth Rifles) Battalion. The Battalion was involved in the attack on St Pierre-Divion on 13 November 1916, advancing under cover of a bank of mist. They took over 720 prisoners and suffered losses of one officer and four men. Unfortunately for Staley he was one of those killed in the fighting, he is commemorated upon the Thiepval Memorial; sold together with copied Commonwealth War Graves details and an extract from the Battalion war diary.
