Tom Bignall was born at Nottingham in 1897, the son of Thomas and Miriam Bignall of 25 Bateman Street, Nottingham. Having been employed as an errand boy in 1911 Bignall enlisted on 15 April 1915, listing his trade as box cutter and his address as 6 Rochdale Terrace, Nottingham. Posted to 15th (Nottingham) Battalion, also called the Bantams, that same day he was appointed Lance Corporal on 1 April 1915 and entered the war in France on 16 June 1916. Bignall was listed as missing only two months later on 31 August 1916, he is commemorated upon the Thiepval Memorial; sold together with copied research including Commonwealth War Graves details, service papers and M.I.C. as well as a Fattorini and Sons leather medal case slightly distressed but otherwise very fine.
