Provisional Postal Usage of Revenues, 1882
New NZ legislation replaced stamps with specific designations like 'Postage', 'Law Courts', 'Land & Deeds' in 1882 with a single set inscribed 'Postage & Revenue'. For some months in 1882-3 the former revenue stamps were consciously used up for the purpose of ordinary mail, and these are referred to here as 'provisional postal usage'.

1881 (26 Nov.) envelope to Bristol via San Francisco incorrectly franked with 1867 Revenue 6d. red-brown and blue and thus charged 1/- on arrival in the UK, 'deficient postage/ fine______' handstamp and '1' handstamped alongside for the 1/- postage due; the envelope with some soiling and peripheral tears, still an attractive and interesting cover
