Mail from United Kingdom During the American Civil War
1861 (3 Dec.) busy envelope to New York marked "Registered" in magenta ink and bearing 2d. blue plate 9 (9, some perfs. trimmed at top) tied by Irish "371" numerals with a fine strike of Parsonstown despatch c.d.s. in blue and "n. york br pkt/36" c.d.s. (20.12), further despatch c.d.s. on the reverse overstruck by circular "dublin/registered" c.d.s. in red (A&H 1495). The vertical pair of 2d. stamps were struck over the edge of the envelope, the flap has been cut so that they may be opened out, the top flap is missing

Pays postage 1/- plus registration 6d. Sent directly from Ireland so no accountancy markings but the British Post Office would have credited the U.S. P.O. with 21c. transatlantic postage plus a further 6c. as half the registration fee
