Mail from United Kingdom During the American Civil War
1861 (16 Oct.) envelope to New York marked "Registered" and bearing 1855-57 6d. lilac (3, one with wing margin) tied by London "24" numerals with fine strikes of the small crown/"registered" (W&J 1133) and the standard-type London registered dated oval code "E" and a good strike of "n. york am pkt/paid" c.d.s. (8.11) and large handstruck "36", Liverpool (17.10) transit on the reverse. A clean and attractive cover

This letter was sent during the American Civil War (March 1861-June 1865) when America was suffering acute inflationary problems. The packet rate was divided into credits for inland postage for each country, 5c. U.S., 3c. G.B. with 16c. credited to the ship carrying the mail. This cover shows red crayon "27" for the 5c. inland, 16c. ocean and 6c. as half the registration fee
