1852 (24 Sept.) large blue entire to New York marked "Registered" and bearing 1841 2d. blue plate 4 (JC-JF and IJ-IL strips of four and three (margins generally good to large) used with 1847-54 Embossed 10d. brown, die 2 block of four (margins generally good to large, almost touching in a couple of places) cancelled by Scottish "186" numeral of Irvine, with U.S accountancy marks of the large "20/cents and curved "paid" and manuscript arrival date "17 Oct. 1852", the reverse with Irvine despatch and Liverpool transit (25.9). There are two vertical folding creases affecting both strips of the 2d., but not apparent through the block of 10d.


An impressive and highly important cover, this being the only recorded block of four of the 10d. used on cover and probably the largest franking to America at this time. Ex Burrus. B.P.A. Certificate (1989)

Pays the quadruple 1/- postage rate (up to 2oz.) plus 6d. registration for the total of 4/6d. The registration only covered this letter as far as Liverpool
