To India: 1857 (1 Aug.) stampless mourning envelope to Agra "Via Southampton & Bombay" bearing Quebec despatch c.d.s., two manuscript "Paid", handstruck "PAID 6d Stg" and unframed "registered", "1/2" rate mark and "No. 31" registration number, a fine strike of the Foreign Branch tall crown/"registered" in red and Bombay transit (20.9), the reverse bears London transit (13.8). Some peripheral soiling and the upper corners with small repairs. The earliest registered letter from Canada to India

The sender paid the 1d. local registration fee plus 8d. postage and 6d. registration. Because the combined postage had been paid to destination this letter was sent without any further charge for registration. Carried from Southampton to Alexandra on the 'Columbo' and from Suez to Bombay on the 'Pekin'. The cover was addressed to an army doctor attached tot he 3rd European Regiment of foot in Agra. This was one of the few places which held out againt the Indian Mutiny
