1842 (10 June) envelope to London marked "Recomandirt" in black ink, diagonal ink stroke, numbered "211" and bearing a fine strike of unframed "wien/recommand/10 jun" in black, with red "Franco" and "grenze" applied in Vienna, sent via Paris where it was stamped "Charge" in black and "autr/2/hunigue" c.d.s. (17.6) was applied in red; the first type London (wide) crown "registered" in red and calculation of charge "2/4" (being postage 1/4d. plus registration 1/-); the reverse with four French "administration des postes/départ/et/arrivée" red wax seals and London arrival (20.6). A very neat cover and a very early registered letter from Austria

There was no UK-Austrian postal convention until 1865. Before 1851 the normal route was via the French frontier towns of Forbach or Hunique. Letters, including registered letters, could be sent either unpaid or prepaid and were treated accordingly on arrival in London
