1840 Penny Black Covers

1841 (12 July) small envelope to London bearing 1d. Black plate 1b, HD (small to good margins, just touching at top) well tied by a brownish red Maltese Cross with Emsworth despatch c.d.s. alongside, boldly marked "38 Registered" and "1/-" rate in red-brown ink and with London Paid tombstone (13.7) and there is some manuscript notation. R.P.S Certificate (2000) which incorrectly observes that the cover has been trimmed at right (it is still complete), and B.P.A. Certificate (2010)

This charming cover is particularly unusual and interesting, this being the only recorded example of a plate 1 stamp being used on registered mail (quite late use for this) and very late use of the Maltese Cross in red which should have been changed to black on February 1841
