1840 Penny Black Covers

1841 (19 Apr.) entire letter to a solicitor in Ellsmere bearing 1d. Black, plate 11 MG (good to very large margins on three sides, just cut into at left) just tied by black Maltese Cross, marked diagonally across the address side "No 52/Registered Letter" and "1/-", there is a good strike of the boxed "paid at/liverpool" datestamp. Also included with this lot is another entire from the same correspondence dated 1841 (19 Apr.) bearing 1d. Black plate 11 MF from the left side of the previous cover (good to enormous margins) tied by black Maltese Cross, the reverse with Liverpool and Ellesmere c.d.s. for the same day. Filing folds affect both adhesives.

Any plate 11 cover is extremely scarce, this is the only known example used on a registered cover and is particularly appealing with its companion letter. It should be noted that the Paid at Liverpool datestamp was usually retained for maritime mail and was probably used here to indicate the cash payment for registration
