These were available up to 31 January 1923 when they ceased to be valid. On 17 December 1920 the League of Nations conferred a Mandate of Administration of the territory on His Britannic Majesty, to be carried out by the government in South Africa. The Mandate came into force on 1 January 1923, on which date the first South African stamps overprinted for use in the territory were issued

1916-20 envelopes (4) from Windhoek addressed locally, Karibib (2) or Swakopmund, that addressed locally franked at 8d. with 2d. plate number block of four and with registration label and framed bi-lingual "Passed by Censor/100" framed cachet in blue, those to Karibib franked at 5d. with registration "r./windhoek/no" handstamp and censored, the other with manuscript registration marking alongside oval intaglio "r", and that to Swakopmund initially underfranked at 3d. and subsequently with an additional 1d. (2) sharing Registered Letter Service datestamp and with oval intaglio "r". An attractive group
