These were available up to 31 January 1923 when they ceased to be valid. On 17 December 1920 the League of Nations conferred a Mandate of Administration of the territory on His Britannic Majesty, to be carried out by the government in South Africa. The Mandate came into force on 1 January 1923, on which date the first South African stamps overprinted for use in the territory were issued

Coy 1st D.L.I." to Rosebank, Cape Town, marked "On Active Service" and bearing 4d. cancelled by "army base p.o/south/africa/5" datestamp with a further strike at left, framed "postage free/base 5./passed by/censor." in blue below adhesive, a further cancellation datestamp on reverse
