U.S.A.: Quincy Turn-Verein, one share, 1885, #139, black. Turnvereins were established earlier in the century by German Americans to follow a system of gymnastics. They later also became venues for entertainment and general social clubs. Several hundred existed around the country later known as Turners to remove the German language which had caused suspicions during the World Wars despite the associations having little or no contact with Germany. The Quincy Turn-Verein was founded in 1869 and in 1885 had moved into a large building on Hampshire Street which was built in the same year. EF.
