Water was poured through the top of the device into a depression into a large sandstone, a natural filtration rock located around the globe above impervious aquifers. The water percolated through slowly at the rate of about one gallon per hour and could restore water to a more pH neutral balance. It has also been considered a helpful process in reducing the transmission of cholera. The business owned by Joshua Henderson, relocated from Coventry Street in October 1802.
