PAXS type, Lewes, Oswold, +HAROLD REX ANG, crowned bust left, sceptre before, rev. +OZPOLD ON LEPEEI, PAXS in central frieze (H H King 278; N.836; Spink 1186), a rich dark cabinet tone, the portrait sharply rendered if a touch doubled, almost extremely fine

Provenance
DNW, 16 September 2014, lot 2417
Purchased Baldwins, 1962

Note:
Many Harold II pennies come from the Upper Chancton Farm hoard found in 1866, which was said to have contained 36 coins of Lewes from the reigns of Edward the Confessor and Harold II, which in all probability is an underestimation. Furthermore the wider hoard record shows a concentration of finds in Sussexthat further skews the numismatic data for Lewes.
