Wessex, Alfred the Great (871-899), Penny, 'London Monogram', type A8(v), 1.52g, 6h, AELFRE-D REX, diademed bust right, with ornate tunic, eye turned upwards to heavens, rev. Monogram, no link between L and O, pellets within O, cross above, cross of five pellets to left (MacKay, London, dies 33 (O17/R30), coin 1; N.644; Spink 1061), softly struck above head, otherwise of quirky style, good very fine to almost extremely fine, a pleasing example of this iconic issue
