Wessex, Alfred the Great (871-899), Penny, 'London Monogram', type A8 (iv), 1.60g, 8h, ÆLFR-ED REX, diademed bust right, wearing ornate tunic, eye turned upwards to heavens, with two rows of pellets (stars [?]) above, rev. LONDONIA Monogram, with bar to A, pellets within O, cross above, cluster of six pellets below (MacKay, London, dies 27 (O16/R24), coin 3; N.644; Spink 1061), lightly toning on a full flan, some partial striking softness, otherwise a pleasingly good very fine and with an established provenance
