Wessex, Alfred the Great (871-899), Penny, 'Cross and Lozenge' type, c. 876-80, Winchester, Heahstan, 1.38g, 5h, +ÄLFRED REX SA, draped and diademed bust right, commencing above head, rev. HEA | STA | NMO | NETA, saltire within central lozenge, arms of cross extending from bar at each lozenge point, pellet in the field in each angle (EMC 2016.0034 this coin; SCBI 9, 247 same dies [= Blackburn and Keynes, 46]; N.629; Spink 1058), darker tone to peripheries framing sharply struck up devices, an outstanding coin with a delightful artistic flair, much as struck and of the highest rarity thus
